President's Message - January 2009

Happy New Year!

I wanted to take the time to wish all the members of the Eastern North Carolina SGNA a very Happy New Year and hope that you and your family stay happy and healthy in the coming year.

I will be taking over as your regional president on January 1. I hope that I will live up to your expectations over the next two years and can continue to grow our region into the best in the country.

In order to meet the goals set for our region it is important to keep the lines of communication open between the membership and the board. I have set up this email address specifically for communicating with the region. Please do not hesitate to add this to your address book and use it as a form of communication with myself and the board. Check out our own regional website it will continually be updated as we go through the year. It is a resource for locations of up coming events, contact information for the board members, pictures from recent regional conferences.

We also need to continue to grow in membership, certification and offer an increased number of high rated educational opportunities to the regional endoscopy nurses and associates.

I challenge each of you to continue to grow in your profession, inspire those around you to grow and learn.

I ask that you commit to recruitment of one new member and mentor a fellow staff member to take the certification exam this year.

Take the time to vote for your national representatives www.sgna.org/NandE/candidates2010.cfm.

Save the date April 10, 2010. Our Spring regional meeting will be held in Wilson, NC. The staff there are working hard to put together an exceptional educational event.

President's Message - August 2008

Hi to all of our SGNA friends both old and new. This has been a great first year for me as president of such a wonderful organization as ENCSGNA. The level of participation and cooperation from many of you across every corner of the region has been exciting as we have all worked together to promote the cause of GI nursing and focused on helping to lift up all members of region 42. This year has started with a thrilling turn out at the "Pot of Gold" conference in March at WakeMed in Raleigh. A good time was had by all as everyone found out that there's a little "Irish" in all of us :-). Good food, good fun and a wealth of knowledge was had by all who attended. Not only was the attendance noteworthy, but through the generous contributions of our vendors and participants, much-needed funds were put in place for future ENCSGNA events and educational scholarships for all ENCSGNA members. Much work goes into the planning and presentation of activities for ENCSGNA. The attendees see the speakers and the vendors at the conferences, but the real heroes are those ENCSGNA members that work behind the scenes, endless hours for months to make one day of quality educational offerings available to the participants. A special thanks goes to all those little leprechauns at WakeMed Endoscopy in Raleigh. Without the commitment of those among us to go the extra mile, these goals of success and excellence cannot be attained. So as we go about the chores of surviving the dog days of summer, trying to stay cool, finding new innovative ways to keep the kids entertained until school starts back, finishing off that tan that will hopefully take you through the winter, take a moment to think about becoming one of those who go above and beyond for all of us in ENCSGNA this year. Ask yourself how you can make a difference and talk with an ENCSGNA rep from your area or call me directly at 919-350-8994. It would be great to work with you and your team to put together the next big event for ENCSGNA.

Speaking of the next big event, mark your calendars for Sept 6, 2008 when we will present the "Harvest of GI Knowledge" at the Friday Center in Chapel Hill. The Endo team from Meadowmont Endoscopy Center at UNC has worked hard all summer to put the final touches on this excellent educational presentation and we all look forward to seeing each and every ENCSGNA member present to support our region and join in all the fun. Bring your collegues ; share with them the benefits of becoming part of this great team.

Until next time, best wishes for a great summer and God bless.

Warmly,
Carol DeFillippo RN
ENCSGNA President

President's Message - May 2007

For everyone who attended the Train the Trainer Course April 28th at WakeMed in Cary, I feel I can say on there behalf it was one of the best courses we have attended. Scopes are the guts of our business and patient safety is our priority. After leaving this course we were not only knowledgeable in all aspects of scope care and infection control, but were also given resource guides for developing Competency Skills Checklist. I encourage everyone to attend one of these programs. We were very fortunate to have been selected as a site and our thanks go to SGNA and Olympus for making this possible. I would also like to thank Fuji for allowing their representative to attend.

We are planning for regional night in Baltimore. The planning committee is excited and feels sure you will be amazed at our display. We currently have approximately 50 from ENC attending.

Our Spring Conference will be at WakeMed in Cary. Linda Kelly and her unit have been busy making preparations. Mark your calendars now to attend and set sail with us on June 15th and 16th.

President's Note - November 2006

Our Fall conference was a great success. We had 127 attendees. The title of our event was Spotlighting GI Nursing in Eastern North Carolina. Our mascot was GI Jane. She was the GI nursing recruiter for ENCSGNA members. Our membership has grown and we want to continue to stimulate interest in our region. We are proud of each member and their accomplishments. Sandy Hall was recognized by her peers as being the Frediest of Freds. Cindy Simpson designed book marks for our region which were distributed at regional night.

Conference speakersMeegan Duncan, Vicki Phillips, and Melynda Crisp of our region presented Endoscopy Update at Wayne Memoria on Nov 16th. They were did an excellent presentation and made their manager Cathy Collins very proud.

Make plans now to attend our events in 2007. Join ENCSGNA and get involved.

President's Note - September 2006

Greetings everyone,

I want to thank each of you for allowing me to serve as your president. GI Nursing is an ever-growing and changing profession and we must continuously strive to learn and develop new skills as technology advances. I would like to challenge each of you to attend the educational offerings which are made available to you. I had the opportunity as President to attend the annual conference in San Antonio last year. It was a breathtaking experience. If you need to have your battery recharged, then this is definitely where you want to connect. The opportunities to network and gain new relationships are around every corner. Make plans now to attend the annual course in Baltimore, Maryland.

Another opportunity to network is right here at home in our region. Our fall conference is being held at Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston on Nov 4th. We hope each of you will make plans to attend "Spotlighting GI Nursing". Our region needs your support. Come and let's network together and chart a course for growth.

I look forward to hosting our meeting and seeing each of you.

Joyce Epps
